Next Up… Avery Wilson
Singer is not a term you’d use to describe Avery Wilson. The tone, the vibrato, the runs…are undeniable and unmatched to say the very least. A notable talent that has caught the attention of music mogul and icon Clive Davis following his appearance on the Voice, has been described as “the next greatest voice”. The CT native has and will continue to make a long lasting impression on not only his musical peers but to his loyal fans but have a strong feeling this is only the beginning. We were able to get a little insight on the R&B sensations’ journey towards self discovery, what he’s learned being in the industry thus far and his dream collab.
DH: When did you (or someone else) realize that you could sing? How did it come about?
AW: I was about 7 or 8 years old when I realized I could sing — or should I say hold a note because I didn’t think I was all that great at first . My dad at a young age asked me if it was a passion I wanted to pursue and I told him yes in the midst of not thinking I had much of voice . I’ve never been afraid of the unknown .
DH: What made you decide to pursue music?
AW: Simply seeing how people reacted to music let alone my voice : it’s like an escape from the world ! It always felt like language we all tend to understand.
DH: When Clive describes you as "The next greatest voice" in the same sentence as mentioning Aretha, Whitney, Luther, Jennifer, Alicia....how does that make you feel?
AW: Ultimately HUMBLED! Every Artist / singer named I’ve admired and learned something from so to know that I could follow in the same sentence as the greats let’s me know my greatness can be seen .
DH: What were some takeaways and/or insights you've come to learn in being in the industry when working alongside such legendary music masterminds?
AW: Be Aware! Know yourself ! Know your gift ! Take care of your business first!
DH: Who are some of the artists (past or present) that you look to for inspiration when creating music? Some of your idols.
AW: Whitney Houston , Luther vandross , Stevie wonder .
DH: Is there a particular EP you've done that really resonates to who you are and why?
AW: I’d say my first EP released independently “ FYI “ reveals my vulnerability as a man something that every man often has to downplay in society that models men after super masculine standards.
DH: You describe that you're in love with "love"? What does this mean for you and its importance?
AW: Love is an action word . It’s something anyone can do and have — so I cherish that simple but complex unconditional theory!
DH: Self-discovery is by all means not an easy task for anyone. We all continue to grow, but what were some steps you've taken to begin that journey?
AW: Most importantly silencing the noise inwardly and outwardly. Stopping myself from getting caught up in the opinions of the world & the opinion I had silently formed of myself based upon fear.
DH: I am sure there are countless people that you'd love to work with but who is that 1 person (and ONLY 1) that'd be a dream to work with, past or present.
AW: Picking one is hard but ALIVE a ballad duet with BEYONCÉ.
DH: What can we expect from the next chapter of Avery Wilson.
AW: Honesty , unwavering strength & unconditional love through my music !
